London's small business hotspots

Date: 9 January 2017

Good transport links and new commercial developments are big attractions when it comes to choosing a location for a small business in a city like London.

Our recent research into the distribution of SMEs in the UK's capital city found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, two of the biggest SME hotspots are close to some of the city's busiest train stations.

SE1 (including Southwark, London Bridge and Waterloo) is the most popular location for SMEs to rent serviced office space in London. SE1 has attracted businesses in a wide range of sectors including retail, finance, health and wellbeing, property, media, IT, law and business services. In all, 7% of London SMEs are now based in SE1.

The second most popular area of London for small firms is NW1, which includes Kings Cross and Euston. The total percentage of SMEs based in NW1 is 3.7%. Other popular areas are Liverpool Street, Old Street and Shoreditch.

Practical considerations, such as transport and amenities, are certainly key drivers but location can also make a strong statement about how a business is perceived by potential clients and partners. Above all it's clear that some sectors are attracted to specific areas as the following infographic shows.
