Antique dealer: Cash purchases

'Cash purchases' are the payments you make to suppliers of stock with whom you don't have an account. You have to pay for these pieces when you buy them.

In the antiques trade it is commonplace for most purchases of stock to be Cash purchases. You are likely to obtain your stock from a variety of sources such as:

  • other dealers (often at fairs and markets)
  • 'runners' (specialist dealers to the trade who visit you with stock for sale)
  • members of the public
  • house clearances
  • auctions (you will have to pay a buyer's premium)
  • private and trade sellers using online marketplaces like eBay

Make an estimate of the amount you are likely to spend on stock and enter this in the months when the expenditure will be incurred.
